How to Clean Composite Decking

Equipment Needed:

  • Power Washer
  • Scraper
  • Cleaning Solution
  • Stiff Brush

Step by Step guide:

  1. Clearing and Preparing Your Deck

If you choose to use a composite cleaner and have furniture or anything that’s not made of composite material, it needs to be removed.

  1. Remove Debris

Ensure all loose debris and leaves are removed from the deck surface using a blower or a broom. Use a scraper or putty knife to remove any standing dirt in between boards.

  1. Mix Cleaning Solution

If using a composite decking cleaner, carefully follow mixing instructions. However, most composite deck boards can be cleaned with a simple soapy water solution.

  1. Apply Solution & Clean

Apply cleaning solution to the deck, working in 5 metre sections at a time, use a stiff brush to remove noticeable dirt and grime. Improve efficiency by allowing one section to soak up the solution whilst you’re cleaning another.

  1. Rinse Well

Once you’ve scrubbed a section, rinse off with a power washer and move onto the next section until the entire deck is clean!

Conditions

Ice & Snow – To remove ice and snow, use rock salt or calcium chloride remove residue by rinsing with water or mild soap/water solution.

  • Tannin, Mildew, Dirt & Grime

Rinsing off your composite decking periodically is important to prevent build-up of pollen/debris, leading to mildew stains. Allow suitable gaps between boards to allow draining.

  • Spot Stains

Scratches, nicks, cuts & grooves can be removed by brushing in the direction of the grain. Brushed area will weather back in 8-10 weeks.
