There was a time when decking required a whole host of treatments in order to keep the boards looking sharp, healthy and colourful, year after year.
Worse still, these processes had to be done with frustrating regularity, making timber maintenance a regular chore for homeowners that opted for decky décor.
Luckily, that all changed with the introduction of “no fade” composite decking in the late ‘90s and the UK has been enjoying long-lasting colour in their outdoor design ever since.
But is composite decking fade proof? And, if not, just how fade resistant is it?
We aim to answer that question and more right here, as we shine a light on the fade-fighting capabilities of composite decking boards.
Do composite decks fade?
Unlike traditional timber, composite decking is extremely fade resistant and capable of maintaining its “like new” looks for years to come.
Meanwhile, our capped composite decking features additional fade protection in the form of a shielding polymer sleeve for the ultimate protection against sun fading.
Is composite decking fade-proof?
Despite its unrivalled powers of fade resistance, as the saying goes, Father Time is undefeated and the passing of time can take its toll even on the durable surface of composite decking.
The sun impacts materials at an atomic level, breaking down chemical bonds and fading colours in the process. As such, virtually all man-made materials will suffer some form of fading when exposed to a continued onslaught of UV rays.
While composite decking is extremely resistant to fading, it isn’t “fade-proof” per se. Any company that boasts such claims is suspect at best – so avoid at all costs.
Effects of sun on composite decking
The sun’s impact on a surface depends largely on the durability of the material in question. The poorer the material, the worse the fade will be.
Continued exposure to the elements can naturally lead to a gradual discolouration, particularly in the event of continued exposure to extreme sun and heat.
Despite this fact, the effects of sunlight are far more forgiving on composite decking than traditional wood. Natural wood will fade to a dull grey, whereas composite decking will merely get marginally lighter in tone.
For capped composite decking, our capped products will experience little to no colour change in its 25-year lifespan. So confident are we in this statement that we even offer 25-year fade and stain warranty for our capped composite decking options, with some products even offering a 30-year warranty with fade and stain cover.
Composite Decking from TimberTech
Not all composite decking is created equally and, as such, the level of fade-resistance can vary dramatically from one brand to the next.
Composite decking from TimberTech is made to the highest standard with the highest quality materials. Backed by a 25 to 30-year warranty, opting for TimberTech decking is a wise option and a safe choice for colour longevity.
