Ideas and updates from the TimberTech blog

Here at TimberTech, we often hear broad statements being made about composite decking that put people off choosing it for their gardens. We’ve dispelled some of the most common composite decking myths so that you can continue your search for new garden decking knowing all the facts!

Appearance

FICTION: Composite decking looks nothing like wood decking…

FACT: Over the years, the methods used to manufacture composite decking have been refined, meaning that more wood-like colours and textures can now be achieved.

Here at TimberTech, we currently stock five different ranges that all offer different wood-like qualities in thirteen different shades. This means our customers have lots of options when it comes to selecting a style and colour they like. We can also combine different colourways to create unique, combination deck designs like the one you see here.

Cost

FICTION: Composite decking is the most expensive decking option on the market…

FACT: The complex way that composite decking is made means that it can often be a little pricier than your average plastic or wood decking initially. However, composite decking will save lots of money in the long run.

TimberTech offers highly durable and practically maintenance free composite decking that means you are guaranteed to save money on; replacing damaged boards, and on purchasing sealants, paints and stains. Unlike wood or plastic, composite decking is a once in a lifetime purchase for most homeowners, so our customers generally don’t mind paying a little extra up-front for a high-quality product.

Environmental Impact

FICTION:  Composite decking isn’t eco-friendly…

FACT: Composite deck boards are often made using responsibly sourced recycled wood and plastics that would have otherwise ended up in landfill. Each year TimberTech recycle 332,000kg of material! This includes; 49 million kilograms of post-industrial wood flour and plastic. We also opt for a closed loop manufacturing process that saves 780,000 litres of water from being wasted every day.

Installation

FICTION: Composite decking is difficult to install compared to other types of decking…

FACT: The installation process for Composite decking is very easy and, as long as it’s installed correctly, shouldn’t need replacing or altering once it’s finished. Composite decking can be installed over the top of various materials including concrete, creating a deck that’s often referred to as a floating deck. TimberTech supply all the information you need to install your own deck if you’d like. Alternatively, our TimberTech installation team, who have 35 years of experience, are happy to install your deck for you! Making installing your deck incredibly stress-free.

Maintenance

FICTION: You need to paint/stain composite deck boards annually…

FACT: If you purchase high-quality composite decking, such as TimberTech decking, you’ll never need to paint or stain it. The board pigments are added when they boards are manufactured, and the capping applied to the surface of the boards protects the colour for years to come. At TimberTech use UV-resistant pigments in their decking to reduce the amount the pigments fade over time, meaning you can enjoy your decking and put maintenance to the back of your mind.

When it comes to composite decking, two brands stand out from the rest as the pioneers and market leaders of composite deck boards; ourselves TimberTech and Trex. However, we believe that when it comes to choosing a composite deck for your home project, you shouldn't look any further than TimberTech and here are a number of reasons why.

Larger Product Range

Unlike Trex, TimberTech offers an extensive range of composite deck options for you to choose from. In total, there are 5 different composite deck types available at TimberTech, each coming in 2-4 varying colour options. Trex on the other hand only offers 2 different types of composite deck. A larger deck and colour range is ideal as it provides customers with more options to choose from, with the ability to meet a plethora of design ideas as well as increasing accessibility to a wider scale of budgets. TimberTech offer quality composite deck boards at both ends of the scale, with their ReliaBoard and VertiGrain boards at the lower end and their EasyClean TerrainTropical and Legacy capped boards offering a premium option. This leads us onto our next comparable.

Materials & Capping

The way in which both brands manufacture their boards is similar. Both use a mixture of recycled wood fibres and plastics to produce the core of each composite deck board. However, the main difference between the two brands is in how they 'cap' their boards. Capped deck boards are coated with a resistant polymer wrap that protects the boards from all types of stains, fades, abrasions and most importantly moisture. Capping prolongs the life of a deck board significantly and the way in which TimberTech choose to cap the boards may be the biggest advantage we have over our competitors.

Trex boards are capped only at the top surface, whereas TimberTech's composite boards are fully wrapped. What this means is TimberTech boards are wrapped in a full polymer sleeve, which completely seals out any moisture from breaking through and potentially causing damage to the board. When exposed to moisture, boards can absorb water which causes the decking to expand and contract which can cause the boards to split or warp. By TimberTech fully protecting their boards, they remove this possibility

Warranty

So, what happens if your boards to split or bow? There's no need to worry as both companies offer a warranty. Trex's warranty stands at 25 years, whereas, TimberTech's warranty stands at 30 years.

For these reasons, we believe that TimberTech is the one and only place to go for your composite decking. We cater to a larger amount of people, manufacture the best boards possible and ensure our customers can enjoy their deck for three whole decades. So, what are you waiting for? Composite decking has established its place as the top choice for low-maintenance high quality decking projects. The range of patterns and finishes available continues to expand and a new addition is EasyClean Legacy Tigerwood from TimberTech.

Capped composite decking is the most robust low-maintenance choice available. The range of finishes continues to grow, but the Tigerwood finish offers something new that has the appearance of hand-finished Tigerwood. Combining this stunning wood pattern with the superb qualities of capped composite decking offers a fine addition to the range of composite decking now available.

Capped composite decking explained

Composite decking is manufactured using wood and plastic polymers. These are often recycled products. The wood may be in the form of fibres, chips or a flour-like consistency and is mixed with the plastic using heat and other treatments. When the mixture is of a suitable consistency it is formed into lengths of decking board. Treatments that protect the colour from fading are added to the mixture. Capped composite decking has the added quality of an external coating that is bonded to the core of the decking. This gives even more durability and resistance to fading, staining and damage. The two types of composite decking available today are capped and non-capped.

What makes capped composite decking so robust?

Although capped composite decking can be worked in exactly the same way that traditional timber decking can and requires no specialised tools to do so it is far more robust than timber. The density and material from which capped composite decking boards are formed offers a high degree of resistance to the things that cause timber to deteriorate, specifically the changes of temperature brought about by the weather, damage from water and moisture, and fungus In other words, capped composite decking won’t rot or deteriorate in the way that traditional timber will.

Super low maintenance

Because of its high levels of durability capped composite decking is also extremely easy to maintain. It does not require painting, sealing or varnishing in the way traditional timber does. The capped surface offers a high level of protection against staining and scratching and requires very basic maintenance such as sweeping and washing with water to keep clean. The surface of TimberTech’s EasyClean Legacy Tigerwood does not trap dust and dirt and so maintenance is minimal.

Always best to obtain samples
