Ideas and updates from the TimberTech blog

Our Reliaboard composite decking offers you an authentic wood experience, but with all the hard-wearing hardiness that you get from Timbertech deck! We’re pretty sure that the main reason people still opt for traditional timber – as opposed to Reliaboard composite decking – is the fact that is it natural. We live in a world where our sofas have to be real leather, and our sparkling wines have to be champagne!

The thing we adore about our Reliaboard composite decking is its unmatched likeness to the flesh of trees – or real wood, if you prefer. We too share your passion for all things authentic, all things genuine, and all things natural; sometimes though, a little compromise can leave you with a much better performing material…

Take our Reliaboard composite decking as an example – it is pretty much indistinguishable from natural wood. Your only concern is that nagging voice that is telling ‘It’s not 100% real’, like you should cast it out of your considerations a result. The truth is though, our composite decking is now made using such perfected techniques that nobody else should be able to pick it out as an ‘imposter’. That is pretty much it; that is the only slight drawback standing between you and your dream decking.

When you start to weigh up that small indifference compared to all the advantages you get from our Reliaboard composite decking, it almost seems irrational to choose anything besides. Our decking is so superior in every other way imaginable, that we urge you to forget about the fact is isn’t 100% natural wood. Furthermore, it does contain wood fibres; our composite decking is made up of hardwood flour and polyethylene using a patented manufacturing process.

The finished result really is something to behold – not only are you left with a beautiful wooden-looking floor surface, but it also has a list of benefits which are real deal-clinchers! Unlike traditional timber decking, our boards do not need any staining or treatment. As soon as they’re laid, they’re ready to face all the punishment our inclement weather can throw at them. This means no warping, no broken boards, and no dedicating large periods of time to regular maintenance!

It is all starting to sound pretty convincing, isn’t it? And, the advantages don’t end here. We back up our promises for the Reliaboard composite decking and its durability with a 25 year warranty! Our decking is not just impervious to water, it also stands up well to heat, and fade. The highly-reflective colour pigments we opt for will also keep it cool, even on summers most scorching days.

Now we’ve started, we’ll finish; our decking is also slip-resistant, and splinter-free. This makes it the safer option, as well being a more weather-resistant, low-maintenance, and durable one. Are you still hung-up on the fact that is isn’t entirely made out of wood?

The truth is, it’s a good thing that this decking isn’t 100% natural wood – if it was, it would come with a whole load of downsides that you don’t get with Reliaboard. What you do have with our decking is an identical-looking wooden surface, that will keep on looking great.

Attention all decking owners: if you have recently purchased some garden decking , and are looking for some new ideas to jazz it up; or, if you have had garden decking for quite some time, but you’re looking for a few ideas to spruce it up, then we have compiled a list of 3 different ways you can deck-out your decking!

Let There Be Lights

We should never take lights for granted, their absence would quite literally send us hurling into a world of darkness! But seriously, the effect well-positioned deck lights can have on your garden decking is quite spellbinding. Just think of what some cleverly placed spot lights could do for an area or room in your house – it’s the same principle for your decking!

Lights can be very emotive in their ability to set the mood, and they can literally transform the entire feel of the place. Adding a few deck lights can bathe your outdoor space in an enticing glow, which is just the kind of ambience you want to create – after-all, decking out your garden should be an attempt to make it more habitable.

Treat your decking like the open-topped room that it is. Yes, technically it’s in a garden, but it’s in your garden, so you can do with it what you wish. Get some really comfortable furniture to place on your garden decking, the kind of furniture you wouldn’t mind spending hours lounging on. The more liveable you make your deck – the more use you will get out of it.

Say you have a couple of hours off one afternoon and you wish to immerse yourself in a good book, just think of how much more likely you’d be to spend it on your deck if you had inviting furniture! Plus, can you think of a more of a more fitting location for a little R&R than being nestled beneath trees in a comfy chair?

If you’ll pardon the pun for a moment, focusing on changing the décor of your garden decking is the best way to breathe some life into it! We are almost sick of saying it, but we really want it to resonate for your own benefit – your outdoor space should be treated like an additional room of your house! As such, don’t neglect your decking, instead incorporate some of your interior styling outdoors.

There are plenty of ways to work on the décor of your decking, and the best thing is there are no boundaries to restrict your choice. A good place to start would be some basic furniture; shop around for your style of tables, chairs, and benches, and see if they have something suitable in an outdoor range. Then you may want to start thinking of something more ornamental: a selection of potted plants and flowers would add some character; you could even go one-step further and look for some kind of statue or ornament that would make a charming addition to your deck. This is all about your personal style, you just need to think of what would work outdoors.

We’ve only scratched the surface with these suggestions, but we hope to have opened your eyes up to some intriguing possibilities. Let us leave you with this thought – the more enticing you make your garden decking, the more people are going to want to use it. What’s the point in having an unused deck? You may as well have not made the effort in the first place.

The options available here at TimberTech are almost endless, but we've recently realised that all the different products and designs we offer can be roughly separated into two categories: Traditional and Modern. We've got a variety of products that will help you to achieve an authentic, natural look in the garden, conversely, we also have all kinds of items that will contribute towards a sleek, contemporary-looking outdoor space.

So which style do you want - traditional or modern?

A Traditional Garden
If you want the charming, traditional effect, you'll want every inch of your outdoor space to look as natural as possible. We recommend using Reliaboard decking for your decked area - the flat-grain effect makes it look just like real wood, and choosing the cedar-coloured boards will ensure that everything looks pleasantly organic. For a truly traditional effect, consider adding our Ornamental Handrail, which is also available in Cedar so that everything will match.

A Contemporary Outdoor Living Space
So you want your garden to look cool and contemporary, do you? Most of our decking products are available in grey, giving you an astoundingly up-to-date look without compromising the naturalistic beauty of the composite wood. Combine the grey deck boards with either a stainless steel handrail or our cable rail system to finish off the look.

Everybody loves natural-looking products, and that's especially true in the garden. Some people decide against composite decking because they want the most natural look possible, and so they buy hardwood decking instead. This is something of a mistake, because high-maintenance wood products require far more care and attention than sturdy composite decking does. And besides, when you but it from TimberTech, composite decking looks as natural as can be!

If you want your deck to look just like genuine wood, but don't want to deal with the hard work that comes with it, we've got something to show you. Reliaboard composite decking is a brand new addition to our range, and the flat-grain deck boards look just like authentic, unsullied timber. Reliaboard is practically indistinguishable from hardwood decking, but it has the same sturdy construction as any of our composite decking products.

Reliaboard is exactly what it sounds like: a truly reliable deck board. It will never need staining or sealing, and it comes with a 25 year warranty when installed in residential spaces (10 years for commercial spaces). It's even compatible with the ingenious CONCEALoc fastening system, which makes for easy installation and a seamless finish. Order a free sample today!

We've yet another successful project to report today, but where the cable rail in Pembrokeshire was a simple supply job - that is, the customer purchased the rail from us and installed it himself - the service we supplied this time was far more comprehensive. Not only did we supply the materials for this deck, we designed and installed it as well!

The customers this time were Mr and Mrs Snelling, who own a Bed & Breakfast on the outskirts of Bridgend. However, it wasn't the guest rooms they were looking to revamp; it was their own private balcony, on the top floor of the building. They wanted to have a place to relax on their own, away from the hustle and bustle of running an accommodation business. They decided that TimberTech composite decking would be perfect for transforming their tired old deck, and that's why they got in touch.

The first step was designing the deck, and so we introduced the Snellings to Phil, our in-house decking architect. He listened to their ideas and created a 3D decking design to give them an idea of how the finished project would look. Here's what Phil came up with:

This initial design was created with Silver Maple+ decking in mind, but the customers eventually decided that they would prefer Brown Oak decking from our EasyClean range. They found the natural look more appealing, and they opted for a cedar-coloured ornamental handrail to match.

Once these decisions had been finalised, the only thing left to do was to build the deck! This is where our deck installation team came in, and as per usual, they did sterling work. Here's what the finished deck looked like:

We think the new balcony looks lovely (especially with those planters!) and judging by the comments we received from Mrs Snelling, it sounds like she and her husband agree!

"The space has been completely transformed into a private haven, just for us. We are really pleased with the result - it looks lovely, and many people have been admiring our decked seating area!"

No matter what kind of service you want, TimberTech will also come through for you. If, like Simon Kiff of Pembrokeshire, you just need us to supply the goods, we're more than happy to do so. Conversely, if you want the full package - design, supply, and installation, just like Mr and Mrs Snelling - we'd be thrilled to hear from you, too!
