If you’re thinking of adding a deck to your garden, there are several different materials you can choose from. Wood, plastic and composite decking all have different properties – but which is the most environmentally conscious choice?

Environmental Impact

Traditional hardwood decking is quite a poor choice if you want to minimise the environmental impact of your new deck. Most hardwood deck boards are made from tropical timber, and as you’ve probably heard, Earth’s tropical forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Wood decking is a product of deforestation, and some of the sealants used to protect wooden deck boards contain potentially harmful chemicals and compounds.

So perhaps plastic decking is a greener option? Well, plastic boards don’t require any trees to be chopped down, but like any plastic product, they take an awfully long time to decompose. Once your plastic boards start to bow and crack – and that’s something that can happen to plastic decking quite quickly – you’ll have to replace them, and the old decking will most likely end up in a landfill.

How Green is TimberTech Composite Decking?

Here at TimberTech, we sell composite decking that, in our opinion, is a much greener choice than wood or plastic. Our boards contain recycled polymers and all-waste hardwood which comes from the furniture and flooring industries – wood that would otherwise be thrown away. Not a single tree is cut down to make TimberTech decking, and in actual fact, our manufacturing process keeps thousands of tonnes of wood out of landfill every year.

Additionally, our boards and our packaging are 100% recyclable. The decking is formaldehyde-free, and it never needs to be stained.

And that’s why we think TimberTech is the most environmentally-conscious decking material on the market.

If you're thinking of adding a raised deck to your garden, here are a few ways that you can cleverly incorporate a creative and functional design into your outdoor space:

Add a Sunken Hot Tub

Hot tubs should not be placed on top of our deck without the correct concrete foundations, so a sunken design is the perfect way to ensure safety and easy access to your tub.

Make a Platform for your Garden Dining Area

Raised decking doesn't have to be substantially higher than the rest of your garden to create a striking visual impact , as you can see from this low-rise platform below.

Add Rounded Edges for a Sleek, Modern Finish

Raised decking doesn't have to be squared off, in fact, our product is so versatile that you can create stunning smooth, curved edges.

Create a Stylish Step Design

For sloped gardens, why not improve your access to lower areas by adding steps to your raised deck area? A glass balustrade will also give you an unrestricted view over the rest of your space.

If you're looking to get more use from your deck and improve its overall appearance, then why not add some handrail lighting to your design? By integrating subtle yet attractive LED lighting into your radiance rail, you can not only improve your decking's visual impact, but its functionality, making it more convenient for you and your guests to use.

Benefits of Handrail Lighting:

  • Versatility - Allows you make the most of your deck during the night, and throughout the darker months of the year.
  • Safety - Our riser lights illuminate your decking steps, making it easy to navigate in low light.
  • Visual Impact - As well as being a practical solution, handrail lighting adds an attractive glow to your outdoor space.

Handrail Lighting Would be Perfect for:

  • Decks with Hot Tubs - Illuminate your midnight soak and enter your tub safely.
  • Outdoor Entertaining - Enhance the setting of your garden party.
  • Front Garden Decks - Create a strong visual impact when visitors approach
  • Families - Make it easier for family members with poor vision to find their way.
  • Isolated Properties - No street lights? No problem!
  • Holiday Homes - Add value to your private or commercial holiday home.

Glass balustrades are a stunning alternative to other types of handrails and balconies. We think glass balustrades provide a modern and chic solution to cordoning off areas of your decking. There is something very adaptable about using glass panels for your balustrade as they do not overpower the look of your home in anyway – the subtle way in which they provide barriers means these would look just as good on an ageing house in the countryside, as they would on an ultra-modern apartment.

As well as offering you limitless style and chic, glass balustrades look particularly good against decking. Here at Timbertech we are the decking specialists after all, so it only makes sense we would turn our attention to products that enhance and complement composite decking. The combination of the quality wood decking against the backdrop of glass and stainless steel makes you feel like you’re on a luxury yacht, or on the terrace of an exclusive establishment.

Glass balustrades then are visually impeccable, not to mention the fact they provide you with all the unspoilt views your garden has to offer, or the gift of light and space in more modest accommodations.

What these balustrades also boast is some serious quality to match their aesthetics. All the posts involved are made from satin polished marine grade stainless steel; the glass used is 10mm ultra strong toughened glass; the brackets used to attach the glass to the posts are cast from a single piece of metal ensuring maximum stability. These glass balustrades also come in a modular system which makes easy to design to your specifications, and fairly simple to install.

It seems these glass balustrades really do have it all! They let you enjoy the beauty of your space without inhibiting the view in anyway – or in smaller areas they give you the illusions of far-stretching space, as well as letting plenty of light in. As they also look very good, and are made using the highest quality materials, these glass balustrades really are the clear choice.
