On the deck in spring

Spring is here, and the weather has taken a very welcome turn for the best! With the sun finally out, now is the perfect time to spend a little quality time on your deck; here are a few ideas for how best to spend these sunny days:

  • Host an outdoor dinner party: Given how few opportunities we Brits get to do so, it's easy to forget how nice it is to eat outdoors. An al fresco dinner party is spectacularly easy to set up - just place a table and a few chairs on the deck and you're ready to go! Bring your food out from the kitchen course by course, or - if you don't feel like cooking - buy a selection of picnic food and have your own outdoor buffet!

  • Have some drinks on the deck: Now that the evenings are getting warmer, you and your friends should have plenty of opportunities to crack open a bottle and watch the sun go down. Wine always tastes better when you're drinking it outdoors!

  • A spot of sunbathing: It's hard to resist catching a few rays when there are actually rays to catch! A deck makes the perfect place to sprawl on a lounger with a good book, a magazine, or just a pair of sunglasses and the fresh air!

If you don't have a deck, don't worry - there's still time to transform your garden in time for summer! Click here to order a free sample of TimberTech's composite decking, or contact us to find out more about what we can do for you and your outdoor space.

Grey composite decking in Spring

It's been a long, nasty winter, but don't worry - it's almost over! Tomorrow (the 20th of March) is the vernal equinox, otherwise known as the first day of spring, which means that things are going to be considerably brighter from now on. We can finally start looking forward to longer, warmer days, and thinking about what we're going to do with them.

If you haven't already decided how you're going to spend your springtime, we at TimberTech have a few suggestions:

  • Invite your friends over for a barbecue. BBQ season starts whenever the sun is out - if you find yourself with an unexpectedly sunny Saturday afternoon on your hands, you simply need to call your friends, pop to the shops, and fire up the barbecue. Eating outdoors is always a great idea, weather permitting; you can even use the oven in the kitchen if you feel like cheating!

  • Work on your green thumb! It's never to late to become an amateur botanist and start planting flowers. The odd bloom here and there can brighten up even the smallest and plainest of gardens, and it's a very rewarding process - nurturing your plants from mere seedlings and watching them grow into beautiful, blooming beauties.

  • Go for a walk. Your local parks will be lovely enough at this time of year, but if you want something a little more engaging, why not check out the National Trust website and see which of their sites are near you? You might discover a real treasure, right on your doorstep!

  • Renovate the garden. If you want to get the most from your own outdoor space this year, now is the time to start your preparations. You may just need to mow the lawn or tidy up the patio a little bit, but you could go further - make use of our composite decking range, add a stunning decked area to your garden, and take the whole space to another level entirely! It's a sure-fire way to enjoy Spring/Summer 2014 to the full.

We're in the middle of February and finally, the days of complete darkness are coming to an end. We're getting a little sunshine in amongst the horrendous flooding and storms, and collectively, us British are looking forward to Spring and Summer. Warm weather, BBQs and sitting in the garden - absolutely blissful! Though it might be hard to believe given the awfully unfortunate weather we've been enduring lately across Great Britain in the wettest winter in 100 years, scientists have announced that there's a 75% chance that summer 2014 will be the hottest summer on record.

That's right folks, it looks like us Brits are in for a heatwave - we personally think we deserve it after the awful weather we've been seeing lately, don't you? This means it's time to jazz up your gardens and get your outdoor spaces in tip-top condition so you can enjoy the gorgeous weather in style.

Our range of composite decking comes in some gorgeous neutral colours and will provide you with a stylish and remarkably low-maintenance deck for you to enjoy the warmest weather on record - you can BBQ, relax and lounge to your heart's content on one of our gorgeous Vertigrain Decks

If you like a little bling in your life and plan on entertaining this summer, why not jazz up your gorgeous deck with our stunning Decking Lights? These cutting-edge LED lights can transform your decking - giving you an outdoor space to be truly proud of.

Cast away your plans for a holiday this year and spend your pennies on creating a beautiful haven for you and your family to enjoy for years to come. If we've got the hottest summer on record heading our way why go abroad when you can sit in your gorgeous garden and enjoy the heatwave here? Add an Ornamental Handrail for the finishing touch and a garden worthy of any interior design magazine!

We’ve come up with 5 compelling small garden ideas that not only help us utilise our space, but they help our space feel fully utilised!

Planning Makes Perfect

We know this isn’t the most captivating place to start, but even the grandest of designs all started with some kind of plan. In fact, planning is even more crucial with a smaller space, as it’s all about getting the placement just right. You’ll want to consider the positioning of the sun throughout the day, as this will help determine where your plants go, and where your seating area is.

All Plants on Deck

You don’t need to have masses of space to have a balcony or decked area, in fact one of our favourite small garden ideas involves creating a sumptuous secluded sanctuary for yourself! Using woven hazel and masses of tall plants you can adorn a decked area beautifully, and ensure your little oasis feels more like a stretch of jungle!

Precision Placement

Placement is key when it comes to designing a small garden – you also need to think about what you are going to use your garden for. A high-quality piece of outdoor furniture that doesn’t compromise too much floor space is a great place to start; not only does this give you a welcoming spot to sit, but it can also act as an ornamental piece in itself when not in use.

Divide and Conquer

We’ve saved the best of our small garden ideas for last, and this one is all about division. If you have a long, narrow garden, why not divide your space into several defined sections? You could open your door onto a small porch or deck for the first section; then you could have a small tree lined set of steps, or a stepping stone feature in the middle bit; and for the last section you could have a tiny lawn, or a set of furniture on some striking patio slabs.

Dividing your garden up allows you the opportunity to flaunt several design ideas in a small space!
