The coronavirus pandemic has forced all of us to spend a lot more time at home - and unsurprisingly, the people of Britain have been getting far more use out of their gardens during lockdown.

In a survey conducted by composite decking specialists TimberTech, 62.5% of respondents said that, since the COVID-19 outbreak, they have been out in the garden much more often than before (250 out of 400 responses).

A further 17% of respondents said they have been out in the garden slightly more often than before (68 out of 400 responses).

With the end of 2020 in sight (thank goodness!), 2021 is fast approaching and with it comes a whole host of new outdoor trends that homeowners and outdoor designers will be keen to implement into their planned outdoor redesigns.

Here at TimberTechUK, we love keeping on top of all things modern and trendy in the decking world and bringing them to you, our loyal customers. So, here we bring the decking trends that we think will take 2021 by storm!

Staycations

We doubt that the word 'staycation' was ever said prior to 2020 but as a result of COVID-19 stopping us from travelling abroad for our holidays, many of us have been forced to stay in the UK for our planned breaks. This has led to many people visiting and experiencing parts of Britain that they've never been to before, however, many people have also chosen to invest the money that would've gone onto a holiday away into improving their own homes and in particular, their gardens and decks.

This is a trend that we expect to fully continue going into 2021 with many households remaining reluctant to travel overseas and instead using the money to create an improved living space in their very own home.

Creative deck designs

Creative outdoor designs were something that we predicted would pick up throughout 2020. This was definitely the case with some outstanding outdoor plans being brought to life and something we fully expect to continue moving into the new year with creativity becoming commonplace. A few of the creative deck design features that we expect to make a return throughout 2021 include:

  • Varying boards widths
  • Single and double picture frames
  • Multiple board colours
  • Breaker boards
  • Unique inlays

Deck lighting

A staple in the deck design world, lighting continues to become an essential element of any modern deck design. This is in no way, shape or form going to slow down as we enter 2021, with more decks being designed to incorporate lighting features.

As a result of more people and families potentially staying put throughout 2021, enabling your deck to become a place where you can spend even more time has never been more important. Adding deck lights allows you and your family to continue enjoying your outdoor space even when the sun has set. Their simple installation also means that you can become creative when choosing where to install them.

Covered decks

The final 2021 decking trend that we think will gain more traction is covered decks! As people move away from seeing their garden as a separate space to being more integrated with their interior space, covered decks are becoming a more popular garden feature.

With a plethora of cover options to choose from, including awnings, verandas and pergolas, there really is no excuse to not consider adding some deck cover next year. Not only does it provide essential shelter when the weather decides to act up, but it also brings an eye-catching element to your garden that most do not have. Also with suitable cover, you are able to bring your inside outside and create a proper outdoor space! Decorate your deck with accessories and items that match the design of the interior of your home to bring a true transition from outside to in!

And there you have it, TimberTechUK's 2021 decking trends! We're excited to see how next year plays out and all of the wonderful deck designs that are sure to emerge. Outdoor deck

England entered its second nationwide lockdown yesterday. The new restrictions replace the multi-tier system that was previously in effect, means that people in all parts of England must now stay at home and avoid contact with other households. Meanwhile, Wales is nearing the end of a two-week 'firebreak' lockdown, but future lockdowns have not been ruled out.

Whichever part of the UK you call home, limits on where you can go and how many people you can meet will probably remain in force for some time yet. Yes, 2020 is nearly at an end, but even with a new year just around the corner, there's little reason to believe that the coronavirus pandemic will be over any time soon.

The UK government's current guidelines state that you should only leave your home for "food, health reasons or work (if you cannot work from home)". But you can still make use of your garden!

Family playing in the garden

Britain is currently in the grip of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic that has already claimed tens of thousands of lives worldwide. In order to slow the virus down, the UK government is urging people to stay at home - although you can still leave the house for the following reasons:

  • Purchasing food and other essentials
  • Going to work (if working from home is not an option)
  • Exercising once per day
  • Medical needs (such as blood donation, caring for others, etc.)

You can also go out in the garden, if you have one - in fact, the government's mental health and wellbeing advice explicitly recommends gardening as a good way to stay healthy during this lockdown.

But don't worry if you haven't got green fingers. There are plenty of things you can do in the garden besides digging, planting and pruning!

As the days get shorter and the temperature gets colder, the allure of sitting out on your open decking area can lose its appeal in favour of the cosy warmth of the indoors.

However, leaving the golden-brown scenery untouched is a huge waste of one of nature’s most beautiful seasonal sights.

What’s more, the brisk outdoors can also be the perfect place to create some lasting fun-filled memories, especially if you have young children or grandkids to share it with.

Make the most of your autumnal landscape this season with these autumn garden activities.

Autumn Garden Ideas

With half-term just around the corner, we’ve delved deep into our rustic bag of tricks to give you’re a whole host of ways to enjoy your garden decking this autumn and give the whole family something to remember along the way.

Halloween

Perhaps the highlight of the entire autumn season, Halloween brings with it a whole host of outdoor fun just waiting to be had.

While the brisk weather may call for some decking downtime as the summer sun takes a back seat, now is the perfect time reconnect with your outdoor space.

Why not utilise your deck area to carve up a devilish Halloween pumpkin ready for the big day? Composite decking is perfect for this, providing a broad surface that won’t stain.

Similarly, where better to introduce the kids to apple bobbing than your water-resistant deck? No arduous clean-up and no fun police necessary.

What’s more, composite decking is also slip-resistant, making it the perfect surface for your underwater fruit-foraging activities.

Leaf Prints

If there’s one thing autumn isn’t short of, its leaves. They’re virtually inescapable at this time of year and, while beautiful at times, can leave your deck a little messy.

Why not kill two birds with one stone and use these leaves to create some fun autumn memories with your family?

Gather up the leaves that have landed haphazardly on your deck and pick out the biggest and best.

Put a blob of poster paint on a paper plate and simply place your leaf of choice into the paint and press the painted leaf onto a piece of paper of card.

Repeat with different leaves and colours to create a fun and colourful autumn pattern.

Leaf Rubbings

If the idea of poster paints sounds a little too messy for your liking, why not try leaf rubbings instead?

Repeat the steps from above, collecting the fallen leaves from your deck area and pick out your leaves of choice.

From there, simply, place your leaf bumpy side up and cover with a piece of paper, using a wax crayon or blunt pencil to rub over the surface until the whole leaf has been revealed.

Bonfire Night

If there was ever an autumn evening that was meant to be enjoyed outdoors, it’s bonfire night.

Whether you plan on creating your own firework display in your garden or simply want to enjoy the array of fireworks that grace the night sky, the garden deck area is the perfect place to watch the night unfold.

You can even get the kids involved by providing sparklers – just be sure to take the relevant safety precautions beforehand (e.g. gloves, water bucket, etc) and supervise at all times.

Why not make the most of the evening by lighting up the barbeque one last time before it goes into hibernation until the following summer?

Bonfire night could become the perfect evening for a family gathering, with ready-made entertainment and hot food to go with!
