Ideas and updates from the TimberTech blog

We recently received a message from Mr Jones, a former customer of ours. He installed his TimberTech deck 12 years ago, and we were thrilled to see that it's still in great condition!

Here's the photo he sent us:

Plastic decking boards

Plastic decking boards are a very popular choice amongst thrifty homeowners. Not only are they relatively cheap to buy, they're also quite easy to look after, requiring far less maintenance than traditional timber boards.

But don't reach for your wallet just yet, because the benefits of plastic are counterbalanced by a number of potentially deal-breaking drawbacks. Like any plastic product, plastic decking boards are not very environmentally-friendly; furthermore, they are prone to bowing and cracking over time, and they lack the authentic beauty that has helped hardwood decking to remain popular even as more practical alternatives have become available.

Happily, there is another way. The issues that plague plastic decking boards are almost completely absent from TimberTech's composite wood decking: our products are attractive, they're authentic-looking, they're eco-friendly, and they don't bow or crack (or splinter, rot, or warp for that matter).

And while the initial cost of composite decking is a little higher than that of plastic decking boards, the long-term benefits more than justify this. In fact, composite wood will almost certainly save you money in the long run; money that would otherwise have been spent on maintaining, repairing and - ultimately - replacing your garden deck can instead be spent on whatever will help you to enjoy your outdoor living space to the full.

As even the briefest glance at TimberTech UK's decking gallery will assure you, the decks that we supply look absolutely fabulous once installed.  The question is, how do you keep your deck looking good going forward?

The answer, happily, is a fairly short one. One of the best things about composite decking is the fact that it requires practically zero maintenance, staying beautiful with minimal effort on your part (click here to learn more about the low-maintenance properties of our decking range).

However, while caring for composite decking is a significantly less labour-intensive task than looking after other materials, there are still a few things you can do to ensure that your TimberTech deck continues to look as good as it possibly can:

  • Power washing your deck every so often is a great way to ensure its continued high performance. While this method can cause wooden decks to become slippery and damaged, this is not a problem for our composite wood boards, which are far less absorbent than their traditional timber counterparts.

  • We also recommend using deck cleaner to keep your deck in peak condition. Feel free to contact TimberTech UK if you'd like us to recommend a suitable deck cleaning product.

And that's just about it - caring for our composite decking really is as simple as the occasional wash and clean!

Rainy day

If you think you hate the British weather, just imagine how the garden decks of this country must feel. Not only do they get rained on every few days, they're also exposed to a very wide range of temperatures over the course of year; our summers are hot, our winters are cold, and these two extremes (compounded, of course, by the aforementioned rain) can quickly leave a traditional timber deck looking warped, faded, and very sorry for itself.

Fortunately, our composite decking is different. TimberTech's patented manufacturing process produces deck boards that are extremely well-suited to the British climate - whatever the weatherman predicts for your part of the country, you'll never have to worry about what it will do to your TimberTech deck!

Why? Because our composite deck boards are...

Britain may not be known for its hot and sunny weather, but we do get the odd warm spell, and this can leave wooden boards looking warped and unsightly (especially when things brighten up directly after a shower). However, this doesn't apply to TimberTech decking, which is made of polymer resins as well as wood fibres. Our boards are also UV-resistant, which prevents their colours from fading in the sunlight.

Why worry about water damage? Our composite decking is far less absorbent than wooden decking materials; instead of permeating the deck boards and causing unsightly stains, moisture simply remains on the surface of the deck, where it quickly evaporates without doing any damage.

With winter on its way, hardwood decks across the country will be increasingly prone to ice and frost issues over the coming months. These decks must be sealed to protect them from cracking and breaking in cold weather, whereas TimberTech's composite decking NEVER needs to be sealed (regardless of the temperature!)

August is almost over and September is tying up its laces, which means that the leaves will soon be turning orange and the nights drawing in. That's right, everyone - Autumn is on the horizon!

If you have a deck in the garden - or if you're planning to add one soon - you may well be wondering what the turning of the seasons means for your boards. The good news is that, if your deck is made of TimberTech composite decking, the answer is 'practically nothing'; our low-maintenance composite wood is exceptionally resilient and requires virtually zero maintenance no matter what page of the calendar you're on.

That being said, there are a couple of things that you may wish to do just to make sure that your composite deck looks its best all through autumn and winter:

  • Keep it free of leaves and branches. If you have any trees overlooking your garden, your deck may get covered in dead leaves as autumn wears on. This isn't a great look, so be sure to sweep away any debris to keep your decking beautiful.

  • Give the boards a clean. When you're preparing your garden for autumn, consider giving your deck boards a quick wash with a suitable deck cleaner. You should only have to do this once to keep things splendid for the entire season; feel free to contact TimberTech UK if you would like us to recommend a deck cleaner for your composite decking.

And that's pretty much it! Our composite decking is guaranteed against splitting, rotting, decaying and warping, so you won't have to worry about any of those issues no matter how bad the weather gets. You won't even need to seal your decking; just sit back and enjoy the beauty of autumn!
