how do you secure composite deck boards

Choosing the right deck boards for your garden can be tough, there are a lot of different things to consider including, how long the boards will last, how difficult they are to maintain and how easy they are to install. You don't want to choose a deck purely on looks to find that you need an army of people to install it! Here at TimberTech, we believe adding a new deck to your garden should be a simple and stress-free process. There are a few different ways you can secure your chosen composite deck boards depending on the results you want to achieve.

Composite Decking Fixings

There are a few composite decking fixtures for you to choose from when you purchase TimberTech composite deck boards. The way that you secure your deck boards ultimately determines the way the finished deck will look, so it's important you choose the right type of boards and fixings that work for you. Take a look at the different fixing options we offer below.

CONCEALoc® Hidden Fasteners

CONCEALoc® hidden fasteners are our most popular deck fitting option. They can be used with our grooved boards to create a seamless deck with no exposed screws on the surface. They're made of durable stainless steel and can be installed easily using a handheld drill.

Unlike other deck fixings, CONCEALoc® hidden fasteners come with a built-in spacer, meaning that your deck boards will be installed the correct distance apart with very little effort. Take a closer look at the way CONCEALoc hidden fasteners are used in the video below:

TOPLoc™ Deck Screws

Another popular way to secure composite decking boards is using our TOPLoc™ deck screws. These can be used with our ungrooved deck boards. While the CONCEALoc® hidden fasteners create a seamless finish, TOPLoc™ deck screws are drilled into the boards through the top face.

Don't worry though, we've colour matched our TOPLoc™ deck screws with our composite decking ranges for reduced visibility. They'll blend in with your new deck boards perfectly.

Here at TimberTech, we take great care to offer a wide range of high-quality decking options, suited to a variety of projects in both domestic and commercial spaces. To ensure that you make the most of your chosen product, it's essential that the deck is installed correctly in order to deliver longevity and a great-looking finish.

Here are a few of our top tips for those who are thinking of installing our composite decking themselves:

  • Always keep the shallow groove (which appears on one edge of each board) consistently on the same side. The fibres of the board are directional, so this will ensure that the sun casts a consistent shadow, giving a uniform shade throughout.
  • Use the CONCEALoc® bracket to fix the first and last board.
  • For the neatest possible finish, pre-drill 4mm pilot holes (do not countersink).
  • When face-fixing boards, drive each screw until the screw’s head is flush with the surface of the board. Do not over-drive.
  • Maximum span between joists is 400mm for residential decks.
  • We recommend a 3-4mm gap between boards (CONCEALoc® is designed to automatically create a 4mm gap between the boards).
  • To aid water run-off, the deck should slope 13mm for every 2.44m away from the house.
