Ideas and updates from the TimberTech blog

While gardening, in general, may seem like the most accessible route to a greener home, how you design your outdoor space can have a notable effect on how eco-friendly it is.

From the use of chemical-pesticides to removing precious trees, certain actions within the garden landscape can have a profoundly negative impact on the environment around you.

Luckily, there are plenty of ways you can counteract this and make your garden the ultimate scene for going green.

Greendependence

When it comes to giving back to their environment, self-sufficiency is the perfect way to save energy and resources while saving the planet at the same time. Here are a few ways you can make the most of what you have at your disposal and take one step closer to garden independence.

Upcycle Old Goods

One of the most effective ways to reduce waste is to reuse what you already have. Luckily, when it comes to the garden, there are a wide variety of ways to make the most of what you’ve already got and repurpose your old goods with a new lease of life.

With a little creativity and a bit of elbow grease, older items that are past their prime can be completely revitalised by gaining permanent residence in your garden. Turning an old chair or table into garden furniture is an easy transition and can be as simple as adding a new coat of paint.

Meanwhile, a wide variety of items can be repurposed as garden planters, from wheelbarrows and metal washtubs to chandeliers and birdcages – the list is limited only to the confines of your creativity. Even an old tyre can make an effective planter!

Water Collection

As far as recycling goes, water collection is a great place to start. It’s simple, requires very little effort and your source material literally falls from the sky. All you have to do is disperse it when needed!

If you are an avid gardener, watering your plants is a chore you will already be familiar with. On the other hand, if you are new to the gardening game and looking to dip your toe in the water, it helps if that water is already there waiting.

Collecting water saves on tap water and makes for the perfect way to water your new upcycled garden planters. Water butt kits can be found at any good hardware store, while a variety can also be found online.

Grow a Pear

What better way to take a give back to the environment and gain a great sense of achievement at the same time than by planting your own fruit and veg in your own garden?

Growing your own fruit and veg not only reduces your impact on the environment but, from an economic standpoint, it’s considerably cheaper too.

Meanwhile, there are also a number of eco-friendly benefits to growing your own food too. With zero transportation and potentially no pesticide use involved, your garden could well be the perfect place to turn your kitchen green.

Eco-Friendly Decking

When it comes to eco-friendly garden ideas, composite decking is an environmentally-friendly option that not only looks good but does good too. At TimberTech, we go the extra mile to make sure your composite decking is as green as can be.

Waste Not, Want Not

Made from a unique blend of recycled hardwood and pure polymer resins, our deck boards fit the eco-friendly edict of reuse and repurpose in the pursuit of waste reduction.

Unlike traditional wood decking products, no trees are felled in the production of our composite deck boards and all of our wood materials come from reclaimed wood.

Meanwhile, 50% of the polymer used is also the result of recycling, creating an end-product that boasts a composition that’s made up of 73% recycled materials in total.

Long-Term Investment

The durable qualities of our composite decking products make them a one-time purchase for many homeowners, further benefitting the environment by negating the need for additional decking in the foreseeable future.

What’s more, TimberTech composite decking requires no painting, sealing or staining throughout its lifecycle making the use of harmful chemicals completely unnecessary, further contributing to the environment.

Sustainably-Sourced

Our end goal is to ultimately make TimberTech products from 95% recycled materials and, we’re pleased to say that this isn’t too far off.

A number of our newest additions scheduled for release this year are made from 100% recycled resin, comprising of items that once served as shampoo bottles, milk jugs and plastic wrap.

Meanwhile, our manufacturing process has also been given the eco-friendly treatment as well, with 99% of the waste material being reclaimed for reuse.

Even the packaging we use to house our products is made from recycled materials and is itself 100% recyclable.

If you’re thinking of adding a deck to your garden, there are several different materials you can choose from. Wood, plastic and composite decking all have different properties – but which is the most environmentally conscious choice?

Environmental Impact

Traditional hardwood decking is quite a poor choice if you want to minimise the environmental impact of your new deck. Most hardwood deck boards are made from tropical timber, and as you’ve probably heard, Earth’s tropical forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Wood decking is a product of deforestation, and some of the sealants used to protect wooden deck boards contain potentially harmful chemicals and compounds.

So perhaps plastic decking is a greener option? Well, plastic boards don’t require any trees to be chopped down, but like any plastic product, they take an awfully long time to decompose. Once your plastic boards start to bow and crack – and that’s something that can happen to plastic decking quite quickly – you’ll have to replace them, and the old decking will most likely end up in a landfill.

How Green is TimberTech Composite Decking?

Here at TimberTech, we sell composite decking that, in our opinion, is a much greener choice than wood or plastic. Our boards contain recycled polymers and all-waste hardwood which comes from the furniture and flooring industries – wood that would otherwise be thrown away. Not a single tree is cut down to make TimberTech decking, and in actual fact, our manufacturing process keeps thousands of tonnes of wood out of landfill every year.

Additionally, our boards and our packaging are 100% recyclable. The decking is formaldehyde-free, and it never needs to be stained.

And that’s why we think TimberTech is the most environmentally-conscious decking material on the market.

Forest

We at TimberTech are very proud of our reputation as an environmentally friendly enterprise. A lot of decking products are decidedly unfriendly as far as the environment is concerned, and we're pleased to offer an alternative solution that consumers don't have to feel guilty about purchasing.

So what makes our decking such a green choice? It's all to do with the way it's made. Whereas the hardwood decking industry relies on deforestation, our eco-friendly composite wood decking is made of recycled materials, which means that no trees whatsoever are cut down to make TimberTech's high-performance deck boards. Instead, we use wood from the furniture and flooring industries that would otherwise be thrown away; this is then turned into wood flour and combined with high-grade polymers to create a truly outstanding product that's both stronger and greener than traditional timber decking.

Of course, reducing deforestation and keeping usable wood out of landfills are just two of the ways in which we fulfil our environmental responsibilities here at TimberTech. Here are some other examples of how we're minimising our impact on the world around us:

  • All of our packaging is 100% recyclable
  • Our recycled decking requires no chemical treatment, which keeps harmful agents out of the ecosystem
  • We are compliant with ISO 14001 standards
  • Our products have a significantly longer lifespan than other decking materials, reducing wastage
  • Our manufacturing processes use energy-efficient lighting and a closed loop water system
  • TimberTech's outdoor lighting products use low-voltage bulbs

As you can see, we really do lead the pack when it comes to being green. If you want to add a deck to your property without causing undue harm to the world around you, TimberTech's recycled decking is the perfect choice - click here to order a free sample, or visit our Eco Decking page for more information.
