So, you’ve decided on a veranda – now what?

When you’re thinking about sprucing up your home with a sizeable addition to your property, it’s easy to overlook some of the equally big decisions that come with it. For would-be verandarers, choosing veranda decking is unquestionably one of those biggies.

Beautiful decking can enhance an otherwise unremarkable veranda design, while a poor choice of decking can ruin a beautiful veranda. On the other hand, if you knock it out of the park with both, you can create an outdoor environment that isn’t just an extension to your house but a true showpiece of your dream home.

Types of veranda decking

When choosing veranda decking, it’s highly likely that you’re going to be torn right away between the choice of traditional timber and modern composite decking.

Classic vs contemporary; charm vs practicality; authentic vs cutting-edge. Decisions, decisions!

For us at TimberTech, there’s no choice necessary – it’s composite all the way!

Made from a combination of natural hardwood and synthetic materials, composite blends old with new in a perfect cocktail of decking delight.

Not convinced? Here’s a closer look at why composite decking is the best choice for your veranda…

Benefits of composite decking

Offering all the perks of modern technological advancement with all the allure of a genuine wood-look finish, composite decking is the perfect middle man between synthetic plastic decking and traditional wood.

Better still, composite decking provides a far more authentic aesthetic than plastic yet also requires less maintenance than wood – virtually no upkeep at all – bringing together the best of both worlds in one perfect package.

Best of all, it also comes with a variety of other bonuses that will keep your veranda looking sleek and sharp for longer. Unlike traditional wood decking, composite decking doesn’t warp or fade in the sun, nor will it bow or crack like plastic. Meanwhile, composite also offers better slip-resistance, which can be an invaluable quality if young children or elderly relatives will be using your veranda.

Composite decking vs capped composite decking

If you’re already convinced and you now have your mind set on composite decking, there is one more choice to consider.

Underneath the overall range of “composite decking” sits two sub-categories: standard composite and capped composite. Capped composite decking offers additional benefits on top of the existing perks of composite decking.

In addition to being durable, low-maintenance and fade resistant (as well as visually stunning), capped composite also has the added advantage of being protected by a moisture-resistant polymer sleeve.

The addition of the extra layer of polymer makes capped composite boards extremely stain resistant – an ideal attribute if you plan on wining and dining on your veranda. Any spills can be easily wiped clean without so much as a drop of evidence left behind.

Why use TimberTech composite decking?

At TimberTech, we use a unique recycling process to breathe new life into re-usable hardwood, creating strong, durable boards that maintain their authentic beauty. Natural-looking, long-lasting and high quality, our composite decking is eco-friendly as well as economical, giving you environmental peace of mind to go with your beautifully decked veranda.

While composite can be more expensive for the initial outlay, it is undoubtedly a worthwhile investment to be made. Hardwood fades, soft wood warps and plastic can be an artificial eye-sore. If you need to replace your decking for any of these reasons, the cost of a substitute can far outweigh the initial saving.

Our products are built to last and stay looking youthful along the way. The modern materials ensure they keep their finish for years to come even though they require minimal upkeep. They won’t need staining or sealing – an occasional clean is all they’ll need to keep their “just laid” shine.

Not all composite decking is alike; in fact, quality varies hugely from supplier to supplier. Our composite decking comes with an impressive 25-year warranty as standard, whereas other products on the market might not even last until Christmas!

What's the difference between good and bad quality composite decking?

One reliable indicator of quality can be seen in the body of the deck board: solid composite decking boards tend to be of a much higher overall quality than hollow boards.

Hollow composite decking may seem like a great choice at first. It's usually a lot cheaper than solid decking and it can look perfectly good on the surface. But the difference in quality lies beneath the surface.

Hollow deck boards have relatively poor structural stability. Solid decking, on the other hand, has a higher density and weight that makes it durable and long lasting

A few things to bear in mind:

  • Solid decking boards have greater load-bearing capabilities.
  • Hollow boards can be noisy underfoot.
  • Over time, hollow decks can start to bow and crack under pressure.
  • While hollow decking may be cheaper at first, repairs and maintenance may well leave you out of pocket in the end.

Solid composite decking boards are the right choice if you want strong, stable, long-lasting decking that looks great and delivers outstanding performance.

All of the decking we supply at TimberTech is high-quality solid composite decking. Choose from a superb selection of deck boards, including our stunning EasyClean Edge+ and EasyClean Reserve ranges. All of our decking products look just like real wood and require a fraction of the maintenance.

However, if you're working with a limited budget and you've decided you want hollow decking, our sister site DeckPlus has a variety of hollow deck boards to choose from - as hollow products go, they're the best around!

We get a lot of questions from customers about the benefits of choosing our decking, which usually focuses on how our products compare with other materials. Naturally, with a massive selection of products on offer, customers want to make sure that they are choosing the best option available to them. In order to produce great results and ensure value for money, customers need to be sure that they are investing in a product that will not only look good but will be a long-lasting and hassle-free addition to their property.

To help you decide whether composite decking is the right choice for you, we've put together a short guide to demonstrate how it measures up to other types of decking.

Composite Decking vs. Hardwood

While hardwood decking can look great, it takes a lot of time to install and produces a substantial amount of waste in the process. In order to speed up the installation while still producing great-looking results, our decking uses a quick, hidden fastener system, which delivers a sleek finish in less time. It will also save you money in the long run, due to the fact that you won't have to perform the time-consuming and costly process of oiling and stripping your deck.

Composite Decking vs. Softwood

Although softwood decking is a popular and cost-effective option for buyers, it may not stand the test of time when it comes to preserving the look it had when it was installed. Not only is it prone to picking up green slime, along with other dirt and debris, it could also crack easily thanks to exposure to wet and cold weather. Unlike softwood decking, ours doesn't call for expensive cleaning products to be maintained, nor does it become dangerous and slippery over time. Thanks to the low wood content of our product and the included mould inhibitor, we make it much easier for you to maintain the look and function of your deck, without having to spend more money on it.

Composite Decking vs.Plastic Decking

Plastic decking has the shared advantage of being easy to maintain, due to the fact that it is made from synthetic material. It's also often praised for its affordability, although this could prove to be untrue over time. While the upfront cost may be low, and the need for stains eliminated, plastic boards can be prone to bowing, flexing and even splitting over time, which means that you will have to spend money on replacing them. The visual quality is also poor in many cases, as it is unable to replicate wood in the same way that composite decking can. The third tripping step for plastic decking, while it may be cheap and low maintenance, is that it is not an environmentally-friendly option. In comparison, TimberTech takes great care to ensure that the entire production process is as green as possible, so you can be sure that your product won't have an unnecessary impact on the natural world.

Traditional timber decking is not one of the safest of surfaces to walk on, particularly in cold and damp conditions. The grooved boards make it easy for dirt and water to settle, which contributes to a very slippery surface.

While some decking companies will claim to offer 'non-slip' decking, we can tell you now that this is simply not true. Nothing can guarantee you from slipping on any surface.

Having said that, our slip-resistant decking strives to lower the risk of injury as much as possible, and we are proud to say it has achieved the best slip-resistant rating in both Britain and Europe (making it the closest thing out there to 'non-slip' that you will find)!

Two major contributing factors to the slipperiness of decking are power washing and mould; both of which penetrate the wood and open it up to damage, in turn making it even more slippery. Luckily none of these problems apply to TimberTech decking, which is specially designed to avoid these issues while remaining tolerant to heavy-duty cleaning. Our boards take in minimal moisture (less than 1.2% to be exact), and are also quick drying, typically taking 30 mins to dry after a wash or rain shower. This means that they are much less likely to remain damp and slippery for an extended period of time, and are also far more resistant to mould and algae issues.

While no decking can 100% guarantee that you have no chance of slipping on it, we feel pretty confident in saying that ours comes the closest to being able to back up that claim!
