Ideas and updates from the TimberTech blog

With the end of 2020 in sight (thank goodness!), 2021 is fast approaching and with it comes a whole host of new outdoor trends that homeowners and outdoor designers will be keen to implement into their planned outdoor redesigns.

Here at TimberTechUK, we love keeping on top of all things modern and trendy in the decking world and bringing them to you, our loyal customers. So, here we bring the decking trends that we think will take 2021 by storm!

Staycations

We doubt that the word 'staycation' was ever said prior to 2020 but as a result of COVID-19 stopping us from travelling abroad for our holidays, many of us have been forced to stay in the UK for our planned breaks. This has led to many people visiting and experiencing parts of Britain that they've never been to before, however, many people have also chosen to invest the money that would've gone onto a holiday away into improving their own homes and in particular, their gardens and decks.

This is a trend that we expect to fully continue going into 2021 with many households remaining reluctant to travel overseas and instead using the money to create an improved living space in their very own home.

Creative deck designs

Creative outdoor designs were something that we predicted would pick up throughout 2020. This was definitely the case with some outstanding outdoor plans being brought to life and something we fully expect to continue moving into the new year with creativity becoming commonplace. A few of the creative deck design features that we expect to make a return throughout 2021 include:

  • Varying boards widths
  • Single and double picture frames
  • Multiple board colours
  • Breaker boards
  • Unique inlays

Deck lighting

A staple in the deck design world, lighting continues to become an essential element of any modern deck design. This is in no way, shape or form going to slow down as we enter 2021, with more decks being designed to incorporate lighting features.

As a result of more people and families potentially staying put throughout 2021, enabling your deck to become a place where you can spend even more time has never been more important. Adding deck lights allows you and your family to continue enjoying your outdoor space even when the sun has set. Their simple installation also means that you can become creative when choosing where to install them.

Covered decks

The final 2021 decking trend that we think will gain more traction is covered decks! As people move away from seeing their garden as a separate space to being more integrated with their interior space, covered decks are becoming a more popular garden feature.

With a plethora of cover options to choose from, including awnings, verandas and pergolas, there really is no excuse to not consider adding some deck cover next year. Not only does it provide essential shelter when the weather decides to act up, but it also brings an eye-catching element to your garden that most do not have. Also with suitable cover, you are able to bring your inside outside and create a proper outdoor space! Decorate your deck with accessories and items that match the design of the interior of your home to bring a true transition from outside to in!

And there you have it, TimberTechUK's 2021 decking trends! We're excited to see how next year plays out and all of the wonderful deck designs that are sure to emerge. Decking lights

If you're adding a deck to your back garden, it's a good idea to include some built-in decking lights. Not only do they look great, they'll also make your deck safer to use after the sun has set - an important consideration if you plan to spend a lot of evenings on your new deck.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year once again and people across the UK are beginning to trim up their houses, dust off the tinsel and dig out their festive soundtracks all in the name of Christmastime!

But why stop at the front door when you’ve got a whole blank canvas outside? If you happen to own an outdoor decking area, why not bring the Christmas spirit to your outdoor living space and go all out with decking Christmas lights!

Christmas Decking Lights

If you’re thinking of illuminating your outside space with some festive cheer but are unsure where to start, fear not – help is at hand!

Here are a few easy ways you can prepare your decking area for the festive festivities!

Traditional Christmas Lights

A tried and tested classic for a reason, incorporating fairy lights into your outdoor decking area over the Xmas period is a great way to inject some Christmas spirit into your exterior design.

Whether you opt for the quintessentially Christmassy white bulbs or prefer to brighten things up with a splash of colour, these string lights never fail to provide your home with a touch of festive radiance and seasonal spirit.

 Icicle Lights

Another popular choice for outdoor Christmas lights, icicle lights placed in a hanging position above your deck from a suitable location can make your decking area both impressive and festive in equal measure.

Whether you hang your icicle lights from an awning, veranda or the house itself, this wonderfully wintry effect is a common sight in Britain throughout December for good reason – it looks awesome!

Festoon Lights

An alternative option to the traditional Christmas lights is the less common option of using festive festoon lighting. Best of all, unlike traditional Christmas lights, festoon lighting can remain in place on your deck all-year-round without warranting a second thought.

Characterised by their big bulbs and hanging formation, festoon lights are often associated with fairgrounds and 1950s America. However, they work just as well as at Christmastime and can instantly transform your decking area into your very own winter wonderland.

Much like icicle lights, festoon lights work well as overhead lighting, hung from a ceiling structure; however, they can also be used to great effect from strategically placed posts and poles.

For an extra wintry effect, opt for ice white bulbs to give your decking a North Pole glow that’s undeniably cool in every sense of the word.

Built-In Deck Lights

Outside of traditional Christmas lighting and the above festoon example, there is a third option that can brighten up your deck for the festive period and keep your exterior area looking radiantly stunning long after Christmas has passed.

LED decking lights are a fantastic addition to your deck design, providing low-level uplighting that’s also completely safe to walk on. Built-in to the deck itself, they blend in seamlessly to the existing deck surface without taking up additional space.

Gorgeously atmospheric, these lights are available in five different colours, including festive favourites red, green and white. Enquire today to find out more!

Composite decking with lights

Beautiful, isn't it? The photo above was sent to us by Stevie Ng, who's recently been hard at work building a new garden deck for himself and his wife Karen to enjoy. The deck isn't quite finished yet, but if this picture is anything to go by, it's coming along very nicely indeed!

Stevie and Karen Ng opted for our VertiGrain 2 composite decking, which combines an authentic-looking wood grain with a cool, contemporary design. The sleek - perhaps even futuristic - appearance of these boards makes VertiGrain an excellent choice for modern garden designs, and this particular deck looks even better thanks to the addition of our built-in deck lights!

We're very excited to glimpse the results of this particular project - we love seeing our composite decking in situ, and we're hoping to have some more photos to share with you once Stevie has finished the job! In the meantime, if you'd like to purchase some of our composite decking for your own garden, give us a call on 029 2037 1584 or click the link below to order a free sample pack.
