Ideas and updates from the TimberTech blog

So, you’ve finally decided to go ahead and purchase composite decking from one of our stunning decking ranges, congratulations on a very wise investment! However, the decision making doesn’t end there. A host of questions still remain now that you have chosen the flooring option for your outdoor living space. To make things easier for you, we’re going to run through a few things that you may want to consider when building your deck.

Location

The location in your outdoor space where your deck is going to be built may already be determined before making your purchase, however, after deciding to choose our composite decking you may think that your new deck may be better suited within a different position. This could be due to our decking complimenting a certain feature or area in your garden, taking advantage of a specific view or to be more or less exposed to the weather and elements. All of these things may impact the location in where your deck may be built.

Installation

The way in which your new deck is going to be installed is another thing you may need to think about. If you have adequate DIY skills, you may decide that you can save time and money by installation your deck boards yourself. If you don’t possess the skills, however, you may decide to utilise our installation fitting service with our team of professional and friendly deck installers, allowing you to sit back and relax while your dream outdoor living space comes to life.

Design, Size & Shape

The design, size and shape of your new deck will be dependent on the location that you decide to build it. Once a decision has been made on where your deck will be built, you can then proceed with choosing the design. This is something that we can also provide assistance with our deck design inspiration and FREE 3D deck design service. Here you are able to view an array of deck designs, including a range of layouts and patterns and then watch see your design come to life by collaborating with our expert team of CAD designers.

Extras: Balustrades, Lighting & Steps

Basic platform decks are by far the simplest to build and offer a classic, clean appearance. If it’s an eye-catching deck that you’re after however, this is something that you may want to avoid. As a result, a multi-level deck may be the deck for you. If this is the case and your deck now sits higher than a few feet off the ground, a balustrade system and steps may be something worth considering. We offer a variety of balustrade, railing systems and steps that not only provide an extra element of safety but also add a stylish touch to your deck. If you plan on utilising your new outdoor space at all times throughout the day and night, installing deck lights may also be an added benefit, allowing and anyone else to see your beautiful new deck no matter the time.

These aren’t all the things that you need to consider when building your deck, but will definitely go a long way in helping you achieve your dream outdoor living space. If you require any further information or assistance with any of the mentioned points or services, then please do not hesitate to contact us today. Here at TimberTech, we specialise in more than just high-quality, low-maintenance decking – we also happen to know a thing or two about installing composite decking rails.

Whether you already have a decking or are getting a deck installed, adding a handrail to the edge of your decked area has benefits both practically and aesthetically. Installing a composite decking rail looks great and can help prevent any unfortunate falls – particularly important if your decking covers a raised area.

So, if you’ve never fit a handrail before and want to get an idea of what to expect, you’ve come to the right place! All of TimberTech’s decking rails are made to be as simple as possible to fit – because we like making your life easier.

To help you along the way, we’ve put together a basic checklist of things to consider when installing a composite decking rail:

Pick your material

Before we can get into how to fit your decking handrail, you first need to select the material you want – TimberTech offers a deck handrail or a sturdy aluminium railing depending on the look you’re after. Both are incredibly low-maintenance and look great!

Plan ahead

Installing a composite decking rail can be tricky business without the proper prep. It may sound obvious, but it’s important you take the time to carefully plan exactly where you’ll feature the handrail on your composite decking – do you want it around the whole perimeter or just the one side? Use your measurements to order the decking handrail in a quantity that meets your specs.

Secure your posts

Secure the base posts of your decking handrail in the selected corners, these act as the foundation of your decking rail – the rest of your handrail will be assembled around these. Use the baseplates to keep the posts secure, it’s important your posts and baseplates are in the correct place before you permanently fix them here – if they are the wrong distance apart it can throw off the rest of your measurements!

The Handrail

Secure the ‘corner connectors’ to the top of your posts – the handrail will be connected between these. Go along the length of the decking, securing corner connectors and adding the handrail between them till your handrail runs as desired between all of the posts.

Extra Details

While you should now have the basic outline of your decking handrail, a lot of the finer installation details will depend on the specific composite decking rail you have decided upon. Generally, the next thing to do will involve slotting the extra posts into place between your corner posts – whatever the next step, with TimberTech the installation process should never be too difficult, so get out those instructions and finish off your handrail!

Composite decking has established its place as the top choice for low-maintenance high quality decking projects. The range of patterns and finishes available continues to expand and a new addition is EasyClean Legacy Tigerwood from TimberTech.

Capped composite decking is the most robust low-maintenance choice available. The range of finishes continues to grow, but the Tigerwood finish offers something new that has the appearance of hand-finished Tigerwood. Combining this stunning wood pattern with the superb qualities of capped composite decking offers a fine addition to the range of composite decking now available.

Capped composite decking explained

Composite decking is manufactured using wood and plastic polymers. These are often recycled products. The wood may be in the form of fibres, chips or a flour-like consistency and is mixed with the plastic using heat and other treatments. When the mixture is of a suitable consistency it is formed into lengths of decking board. Treatments that protect the colour from fading are added to the mixture. Capped composite decking has the added quality of an external coating that is bonded to the core of the decking. This gives even more durability and resistance to fading, staining and damage. The two types of composite decking available today are capped and non-capped.

What makes capped composite decking so robust?

Although capped composite decking can be worked in exactly the same way that traditional timber decking can and requires no specialised tools to do so it is far more robust than timber. The density and material from which capped composite decking boards are formed offers a high degree of resistance to the things that cause timber to deteriorate, specifically the changes of temperature brought about by the weather, damage from water and moisture, and fungus In other words, capped composite decking won’t rot or deteriorate in the way that traditional timber will.

Super low maintenance

Because of its high levels of durability capped composite decking is also extremely easy to maintain. It does not require painting, sealing or varnishing in the way traditional timber does. The capped surface offers a high level of protection against staining and scratching and requires very basic maintenance such as sweeping and washing with water to keep clean. The surface of TimberTech’s EasyClean Legacy Tigerwood does not trap dust and dirt and so maintenance is minimal.

Always best to obtain samples

Whatever the project or your personal taste it is always wise to take advantage of the free samples that are  available from suppliers. TimberTech offer free samples of our EasyClean Legacy Tigerwood. There is no substitution for handling the product and seeing a sample ‘on site.’
