Ideas and updates from the TimberTech blog

A lot of people planning their garden makeovers are worried about how to install decking. A quick search on various DIY forums offer conflicting advice. “It’s easy!” say some. “It’s a nightmare!” say others.

They’re usually talking about how to install decking that comes from a DIY superstore – your bog-standard, softwood decking - the installation of which can involve a lot of wasted timber, and whilst it will look good in the short term, a softwood deck will soon succumb to the elements and become covered in algae and slippery.  So, why not rediscover decking  and take a look at composite decking, which is a different product altogether. You’ll get the clean lines and neat finish of traditional decking, with the look of real wood, but without the fiddly installation, and maintenance .

Our customers who are enquiring about how to install decking are often surprised by how easy TimberTech is to fit.  As our decking boards are made from wood composite – a blend of recycled wood and polymer – there are no knots, so you can use every single bit of them. It’s easier to fit than traditional decking using standard tools, and is available with a grooved edge and a hidden fastener system called CONCEALoc® for a quicker, easier, visible fixing-free finish. It’s splinter-free too, so you won’t have get the tweezers on your hands when you’ve finished.

On our website, we’ve even got a complete guide on how to install decking, as well as an FAQ section with answers to all of your installation questions.

Better still, let our expert team do the work for you. With a bespoke design and fitting service, and a virtually no-maintenance deck, all you need to do is put something in the fridge to chill, then kick back, relax and enjoy your new deck.

If you’re thinking about hardwood decking boards, then what a great choice! Compared to the mass-produced, softwood boards you get in your DIY superstore, they’re a lot better quality and come in those gorgeous tropical hardwood colours too.

But before you make your mind up and buy hardwood decking boards, have a look at our decking products – you might have second thoughts about what sort of decking you choose.

While hardwood decking boards look great, they do come with their problems. After their first season of looking all new and shiny, you’ll have to spend time the following year sanding and staining them. They can get really slippery and hazardous in the wet weather, and let’s not mention the environmental impact of cutting down all those trees.

So have a look at TimberTech – our products are greener and cleaner, and make all kinds of sense. Our Earthwood Evolutions range come in tropical hardwood shades like teak, walnut and rosewood, so you’ll get the effect of hardwood decking boards but without the maintenance or the environmental impact. Have a look at this article for the full story on TimberTech vs hardwood decking boards.

Are you a fan of ITV's Alan Titchmarsh Show Love Your Garden? Well the team at TimberTech have been glued to their TV sets over the past five weeks as Alan Titchmarsh, David Domoney and the rest of the Love Your Garden team have transformed the gardens of truly deserving people into practical, modern outdoor living spaces.

Did you see last night's episode? Episode 5 of Love Your Garden which aired at 8pm last night on ITV was of particular of interest to us here at TimberTech. Alan Titchmarsh and the team helped to transform the unruly garden at the new home of recent ex-serviceman Ian Costello. Having recently been invalided out from the army Ian has moved to new living accommodation in Norwich, and whilst the interior of the bungalow is ideal for him and his family, the garden was very overgrown and unruly.

In stepped Alan and the Love Your Garden team to create the ultimate outdoor living space for Ian and his family - incorporating an open sided outdoor cabin with a fantastic dining table with built-in BBQ, a hot tub, as well as a separate children's play area, incorporating a Wendy house, play area and a vegetable plot. All of these new features in Ian's new garden looked amazing, but what was even more striking was the way all of these new features were intertwined with the inclusion of a wide expanse of composite decking.

The inclusion of the grey composite deck really helped to pull together all aspects of the Costello's new garden. The integration of this multi-levelled composite deck meant that the garden could be used for a variety of applications - the low maintenance composite decking was ideal on a wide expanse for lounge furniture, as well as being ideal for smaller areas such as for paths. It was also ideal for creating multiple levels in connecting the raised deck to the lower deck steps. Lastly it was used very cleverly around the Hot Tub area, and being slip-resistant means that it's safe for the entire family.

Composite decking really is a versatile form of outdoor flooring, and what's more as presenter David Domoney pointed out in last night's Love Your Garden show; unlike softwood which is high maintenance and will rot; and unlike hardwood decking, which still requires maintenance, composite decking is virtually maintenance free, and long -lasting! It is however important to understand that as with softwood and hardwood decks, composite decking comes in varying grades. Quality may vary, and whilst some boards are hollow, some are also solid and therefore provide improved strength and long lasting performance. TimerTech composite deck boards are solid in profile, and as with the decking featured by David Domoney last night, TimberTech's most popular ranges can be fixed using a secret fixing system. Furthermore, TimberTech composite decking is guaranteed for 25 years.
