If you’re thinking of adding a deck to your garden, there are several different materials you can choose from. Wood, plastic and composite decking all have different properties – but which is the most environmentally conscious choice?
Traditional hardwood decking is quite a poor choice if you want to minimise the environmental impact of your new deck. Most hardwood deck boards are made from tropical timber, and as you’ve probably heard, Earth’s tropical forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Wood decking is a product of deforestation, and some of the sealants used to protect wooden deck boards contain potentially harmful chemicals and compounds.
So perhaps plastic decking is a greener option? Well, plastic boards don’t require any trees to be chopped down, but like any plastic product, they take an awfully long time to decompose. Once your plastic boards start to bow and crack – and that’s something that can happen to plastic decking quite quickly – you’ll have to replace them, and the old decking will most likely end up in a landfill.
How Green is TimberTech Composite Decking?
Here at TimberTech, we sell composite decking that, in our opinion, is a much greener choice than wood or plastic. Our boards contain recycled polymers and all-waste hardwood which comes from the furniture and flooring industries – wood that would otherwise be thrown away. Not a single tree is cut down to make TimberTech decking, and in actual fact, our manufacturing process keeps thousands of tonnes of wood out of landfill every year.

Additionally, our boards and our packaging are 100% recyclable. The decking is formaldehyde-free, and it never needs to be stained.
And that’s why we think TimberTech is the most environmentally-conscious decking material on the market.
