Maintenance issues with other decking materials

Softwood decking – becomes very slippery within a short period as it stays wet for prolonged periods assisting the growth of mould and mildew on the surface. This also causes softwood to deteriorate visually very quickly by turning black. Annual cleaning and treating with a paint or stain required.

Hardwood decking – difficult to install and scrap of 10 or even 15% on installation is normal. Hardwood decking requires oiling to prevent the timber from drying out and splitting/splintering. Also, fitting hardwood decking to balconies can cause problems when the timber leaches out the natural sap/tannin which discolours rendered/brick walls.
